A practical, evidence-based guide for future and practising personal trainers
Effective personal training program design is more than selecting a list of exercises. It is a structured process that connects a client’s goals, training experience, health, movement ability, schedule and recovery capacity with an appropriate training plan. The best programs are clear enough to follow, flexible enough to adjust and progressive enough to keep producing results.
For personal trainers, learning how to make these decisions is one of the most important parts of professional practice. The following eight principles provide a practical framework for designing safer, more individualised and more effective programs.

1. Start with assessment and a clear training goal
A program should begin with the client, not the exercise library. Before choosing sets and repetitions, a trainer needs to understand the client’s primary goal, current activity level, training history, available equipment, preferences, schedule and any relevant health or injury considerations. Screening and referral are also important when information falls outside a trainer’s scope of practice.
A clear goal gives the program direction. Improving maximal strength, building muscle, increasing work capacity and preparing for a sporting task may require different priorities. The goal should be specific enough to guide decisions and realistic enough to support consistent participation.
2. Apply progressive overload without rushing it
Progressive overload means gradually increasing the training challenge as the client adapts. Load is only one option. A trainer can also adjust repetitions, sets, range of motion, movement control, exercise difficulty, training frequency or rest periods. Progression should be earned through appropriate technique and recovery rather than forced according to an inflexible calendar.
Recent resistance-training guidance reinforces a useful message: consistency matters more than unnecessary complexity. A simple program that a client completes regularly is usually more valuable than an advanced plan they cannot sustain.
3. Use specificity to match the program to the outcome
The principle of specificity means the body adapts to the demands repeatedly placed on it. Exercise choice, load, volume, speed, range of motion and rest should therefore reflect the client’s intended outcome. A client seeking strength needs regular exposure to relevant strength tasks, while someone developing muscular endurance needs sufficient repeated work at an appropriate intensity.
Specificity does not mean every session must look identical. It means the overall plan contains enough relevant practice to drive the desired adaptation.
4. Balance training stress with recovery
Training creates fatigue as well as adaptation. Good programming manages both. The appropriate workload depends on the client’s experience, sleep, nutrition, life stress, age, health and ability to recover between sessions. More training is not automatically better.
Trainers should monitor performance, technique, soreness, motivation and session feedback. When fatigue accumulates or performance declines, the program may need a reduction in volume, intensity or exercise complexity. Planned easier periods can also be useful, particularly for experienced clients.
5. Select exercises for the individual
Exercise selection should reflect the goal, but it must also suit the person performing the movement. A balanced resistance program will often include squat, hinge, push, pull, carry or locomotion patterns, together with trunk and stability work where appropriate. The exact exercises can vary.
The “best” exercise is one the client can perform safely, progress over time and complete consistently. Equipment access, comfort, skill level, previous pain, body proportions and personal preference all affect that choice.
6. Plan volume, intensity, frequency and rest together
Programming variables interact. Increasing weekly volume without considering intensity, frequency and recovery can quickly make a program unrealistic. A trainer should decide how much work is needed, how hard it should be, how often it will be performed and how it will fit into the client’s week.
Evidence suggests that heavier loads are especially useful when maximal strength is the priority, while muscle growth can occur across a range of loads when effort and weekly training volume are appropriate. The practical prescription should still be adjusted to the individual rather than copied from a generic template.
7. Use planned variation and periodisation where it helps
Variation can maintain progress, manage fatigue and keep training engaging, but random change makes progress difficult to evaluate. Planned variation may include changes to repetition ranges, exercise variations, weekly loading or training phases.
Periodisation is the organisation of training across time. Research indicates that periodised approaches can provide an advantage for maximal strength, particularly in trained individuals, although the ideal model depends on the person and the outcome. Beginners often progress well with a simple, consistent plan before more complex organisation is required.
8. Build adherence into the program
A technically perfect program cannot work if the client does not follow it. Effective trainers consider enjoyment, confidence, convenience, time, social support and the client’s reasons for training. Collaborative goal setting and regular feedback help clients take ownership of the process.
This is where coaching becomes as important as exercise science. The program should challenge the client, but it should also fit their real life.
